The Easter Journey

2001 was the year Bethlehem Baptist Church started The Easter Journey.

It stemmed from the dissatisfaction of senior Pastor Craig Vernall with the way traditional Easter programmes were run and a frustration with how so many people failed to take seriously the most important date on the Christian calendar. Easter needed to be 'Reclaimed'. As a result, a small team of five dedicated individuals set out to create a space where people could hear and see the Easter Story.

Initially the idea was very simple; to try and describe the Easter story over the Easter weekend in a way that was interactive, contemporary and truthful. Over the ensuing years it has grown to become a very professional display. Using all forms of art, media and engaging the senses, The Journey challenges individuals to pause and consider its significance.

Each year a variation of the theme of the Easter story is determined by team leaders. This is story-boarded and becomes up to 50 different scenes, describing the journey that Jesus made to the cross and beyond.

The set up is a huge undertaking. The church building is cleared, windows are blacked out, props and artwork are set up, lights are turned off, candles lit and music and DVDs turned on. This sets the stage for an environment and ambience that is The Easter Journey. A small army of volunteers serve to make the event a reality; from those serving in the café or maintaining the displays to a dedicated group of men who sprout beards for the occasion as actors to depict Christ on the cross in a very real way.

Planning happens months in advance and hundreds of volunteers pitch in. Plumbers, electricians and builders extend their creative abilities! Props are created and borrowed, artists are called upon and anyone who is willing to lend a hand in the lead up is encouraged to come along to the prop making nights to connect, help, and have some fun.

In 2010, over 8000 people experienced the Easter Journey. We have every confidence the Easter message has been reclaimed in the essence of this dynamic and powerful event.
